Alice Springs… The Prayer Shack

The Prayer Shack

David Sinden and Andre Auert headed out west to Alice Springs hoping to record several books of the Bible in a couple of Aboriginal languages: Pintupi-Luritja and Ngaanyatjarra. This was Andre’s first recording trip as his year as a trainee recordist comes to an end. David went to supervise and help as the senior experienced recordist.

This trip was a team effort! Recording happened in the Prayer Shack, operated from a Christian couple’s bed and breakfast. It had surprisingly good acoustics and didn’t require too many mattresses to convert it into a suitable studio! The resident cricket did cause some consternation with its chirping. Bashing the wall would shut it up for a while.

The rest of the team comprised of GRN and AuSIL who planned the recordings. Lavinia and Cynthia are local ladies who enthusiastically provided their voices. A local Baptist church provided dinner, and the Salvation Army provided hospitality to David and Andre for the first week.

Praise God! They managed to record more than was originally planned. Andre and David now have the job of editing, which will take several months. Speakers of the languages will then be called upon to check the recordings before they are made publicly available.

Excitingly, those involved in the project are wanting to record more. Lavinia’s husband would like to record conversations between mature Christian men discussing Aboriginal law and other cultural matters. Plus there is the desire to record more of the Bible.

A highlight of the trip for David and Andre was eating kangaroo tail prepared the traditional way. This meal was prepared to celebrate the end of the Pintupi-Luritja recording.

Kriol News

Several Kriol songs were added to 5fish. This caused great excitement and people reportedly listened to them all night! Tumi Tiger is being translated into Kriol. Please pray that this project might come to fruition for the benefit of children suffering trauma.

For Prayer...

There is a growing call for an established recording studio and resident recording personnel in the Northern Territory. Please pray for God’s provision of the people and the facilities required. Pray too for more enthusiastic people willing and able to develop scripts, translate the Bible, and lend their voice and testimony. All to the glory of God!
