A Surprise in the Wilderness

A story from Asia...

I would love to provide details, but many lives would be endangered. I told this story to a returned missionary, and he said many would weep tears of joy to hear this account. The story comes from one of our overseas GRN teams. They write:

The following report outlines the extraordinary encounter with S, a 36-year-old Christian woman, who became a beacon of hope and light amidst the spiritual challenges faced during our team’s mission in a remote valley. This narrative provides insight into the cultural and spiritual dynamics of the region, as well as the significant milestones achieved in our team’s linguistic and spiritual endeavours.

In a remote valley with a rich history, having a background influenced by Buddhism and the worship of a mythical snake. The region transformed by enlightened leadership offering education and opportunities following the reign of harsh rulers. The people are known for their hospitality, but our team faced spiritual resistance and intolerance, creating a challenging environment for research and outreach.

In July 2024, during an Intercessors Camp, our team connected with M, their translator. After a day of work, M unexpectedly invited our team to his sister S’s home. The journey to her residence was arduous, marked by steep and narrow paths, but it led to a warm and welcoming household.

S’s family—a husband and five children—embraced our team with open hearts. During their visit, S shared fragments of her childhood, revealing her exposure to Christianity while growing up in a town. Her family had been baptized at the local Christian Hospital, and she expressed her enduring connection to Christian teachings through hymns and memories.

Initially, S’s faith seemed a part of her past. However, subsequent events unveiled a profound truth. Following our team leader’s hospitalization in that same hospital due to hypothermia, further discussions revealed that S and her entire family were baptized Christians. This discovery, shared by a close friend, Emmanuel, filled us with awe and gratitude.

S recounted her journey:

Born in the valley, she moved to town as a child when her father secured employment at the hospital.

Raised in a Christian environment, she and her siblings were baptized and embraced the faith wholeheartedly.

Returning to the valley to reclaim family land, S faced persecution for her faith, including domestic violence. Despite these challenges, she remained steadfast, raising her children with Christian values.

S shared a prophetic dream that brought her hope during her trials. It foretold the arrival of believers who would rekindle her faith. This prophecy was fulfilled when our team entered her home.

During our team’s week-long stay with S’s family in November 2024, they experienced profound fellowship and joy. Our mission yielded:

Translation of five chapters of the Gospel of Luke into one language.

Recording of two chapters of our Look, Listen and Live series into a second language.

These achievements are a testament to God’s providence and the strength of faith within this isolated community.

The encounter with S and her family underscores the resilience of faith amidst adversity. It highlights the spiritual significance of fellowship and the transformative power of prayer and persistence. Our team return from this mission with renewed faith, linguistic progress, and a deepened understanding of God’s work in this remote valley.
